Why babies' photos get rejected more often
Closed eyes. Newborns and young infants spend a lot of time with their eyes closed or half-closed, and a passport photo needs eyes fully open and visible. This is usually the single biggest cause of retakes.
A parent's hand in frame. Photos taken with a parent holding the baby's head steady, or supporting them from behind, often show a hand or arm at the edge of the frame — even partially visible, this fails the "no other person in frame" rule.
Background objects. A car seat, cushion or patterned blanket behind the baby can register as background clutter if it's visible around the edges of a tightly cropped shot.
How to get a usable shot
- Lay the baby on a plain white sheet, on their back, in bright natural light — daylight near a window works well.
- Take several photos in quick succession; babies' eyes open and close fast, so more shots means a better chance of a clean one.
- Frame the shot so no supporting hand, toy or patterned surface is visible, then crop tightly around the face if needed.

FAQ
Does the baby need a neutral expression? Not as strictly as an adult — a natural, unposed expression with eyes open is generally what's asked for, since a neutral expression is difficult to get consistently from an infant.
Can I hold the baby's head from behind, out of frame? Only if no part of your hand or arm is visible in the final cropped photo — frame and crop carefully to check.
