Passport photo rejected? Here's how to fix it

Spec pending verification against the official source — confirm on the official portal before you submit.

Most rejected Indian passport photos fail for one of six reasons: a background that isn't truly white, a face that's too small in the frame, glasses, a smile, an outdated 51×51 mm square crop, or a file that's the wrong dimensions. Fix the cause, not the file.

The six causes, in the order they actually happen

1. The background is not white enough

This is the most common rejection by a wide margin. A white wall photographs as light grey. Worse, standing close to a wall casts a shadow behind your head, and that shadow reads as a non-white background even when the wall itself is fine.

Fix: replace the background entirely rather than trying to photograph a perfect white wall. Upload above and it's set to pure white.

2. Your face is too small in the frame

India requires a larger face than most countries — around 36–38 mm from chin to crown, roughly 80–85% of the frame height. A photo cropped like a normal portrait leaves too much space around the head and gets rejected for face size even though everything else is correct.

Fix: crop to the required face height, not to what looks nice.

3. You're wearing glasses

Not permitted since 2020. This includes thin frames and clear lenses.

Fix: retake without glasses. There is no editing workaround, and you should not attempt one.

4. You're smiling

The expression must be neutral with the mouth closed. A slight smile is still a smile.

Fix: retake with a neutral expression.

5. You used the old square size

India moved to the ICAO 35 × 45 mm standard and retired the older 51 × 51 mm square. Studios and online tools that haven't updated still output the square format, and it now fails.

Fix: re-crop to 35 × 45 mm. If a studio gave you square prints recently, they are using the old spec.

6. Wrong file dimensions or size on upload

The portal checks pixel dimensions and file size before it accepts the upload. A photo that's correct in millimetres can still fail if the file is the wrong pixel size.

Fix: export at the pixel dimensions the portal asks for.

What the rejection usually looks like

At a PSK/POPSK counter, staff reject it in person and you're sent to re-take. Online, the Passport Seva upload either refuses the file or the application is flagged later — which is worse, because you lose time.

If you've already been rejected once

Retake the photo rather than re-editing the rejected one. Most rejections are caused by how the photo was taken — lighting, shadows, glasses, expression — and no amount of editing fixes a shadow across the face or a pair of glasses.

Take a fresh photo in even, front-facing daylight, then fix the background, crop and file size above.

Do not use AI to fix a rejected photo

Face-editing and AI-generated portraits can cause a photo to be flagged. Background replacement and cropping are ordinary photo processing. Altering your face is not, and it risks a far bigger problem than a rejected photo.
