Indian visa photo size — 2×2 in square for foreign nationals

Loading preset…

The Indian e-Visa photo is a 2 × 2 inch (51 × 51 mm) square photo with a plain white background — a different shape from the 35 × 45 mm rectangle used for the Indian passport itself.

Don't reuse your passport photo

This is the single most common mistake on this page. An Indian passport photo is a 7:9 rectangle. The Indian e-Visa photo is a 1:1 square. Uploading a passport-shaped photo to the visa application, even if you crop it down, usually leaves the face too small or oddly positioned for a square frame.

Requirement Value
Shape Square
Size 2 × 2 in (51 × 51 mm)
Background Plain white
Expression Neutral, both eyes open
Head coverings Only for religious reasons, face fully visible

Who this applies to

This page is for foreign nationals applying for an Indian visa (tourist, business, medical, e-Visa) — not for Indian citizens applying for an Indian passport. If you're an Indian citizen, see the passport photo spec instead.

How to make one

  1. Upload a photo taken against any background in even light.
  2. It's cropped to a square, the background is set to plain white, and your face is centred.
  3. Download the file and upload it directly to the e-Visa photo field.

FAQ

Is this the same as a US visa photo? The shape and size are similar — both are 2×2 inch squares — but the exact head-size percentage and file size limits differ between the two portals. Use the matching preset for each: this one for the Indian e-Visa, the US visa preset for a US application.

Can I wear glasses? Most visa photo rules, like passport rules, disallow glasses or require glare-free clear lenses at minimum. Check the current e-Visa photo guidance before your appointment or upload.

What file format does the portal want? JPEG is the near-universal expectation for these portals; confirm the exact KB range on the current application page, as it can change between portal updates.
